"Up Your Game" with Stretching for Golf

Hey golfers!  Want to improve your golf game? Flexibility training can have a huge impact on your ball speed, power, and overall performance.  The research is in and there is no longer any question about the benefits of a comprehensive stretching program to make positive improvements in your game.  A golf swing is a compound movement where multiple muscles function together to help you drive the ball far and straight.  One single motion incorporates several components of fitness including strength, core stability, mobility, cardio, and flexibility.

In general, we lose about 10% of our flexibility every decade after age 25, so routine stretching can improve range of motion in your hips, trunk and shoulder areas which is paramount to enhancing your golf game.

Stretching will help you:

  • Develop tissue length allowing for a greater range of motion that takes the pressure off the lower back and shoulders.

  • Increase your circulation bringing more blood to the working muscles which improve performance and removes waste from the tissue.

  • Improve your posture reducing muscle imbalances we develop over time.  Prolonged sitting from computer work, etc. can cause tight chest, neck muscles, and a weak mid-back.

  • Reduce muscle tension -  muscles tend to be more relaxed if stretched and will reduce post-game soreness and cramps.

  • Minimize the occurrence of golf-related injuries.

In golf, the force applied at the moment of impact can be eight times greater than your body weight so you need to make sure your body has the ability to absorb that impact!  Increased strength and mobility will allow you to increase muscular power and improve your skill level.  Start with a basic warm-up (easy swings, walking, etc.) and “dynamically” stretch all the major muscles including quads, hamstrings, trunk, and shoulders.  After your golf session, “static” stretching is more appropriate holding each stretch for a minimum of 30 seconds.

At eFitClub, we are here to help you “UP YOUR GAME”, so we will be offering a 30-minute golf stretch program 3x a week on M-W-F at 11:00 am.  Plan to join us and you will be well on your way to greater progress and performance on the links!!
